The image and the sanctuary
The most famous feature of the temple is its polychrome interior paintings, made by Father Émile Petitot, IMO, with biblical and Marian motifs and decorations that integrate elements of local culture. These paintings cover ceilings and walls and make the building a unique work of art in the north; this aspect is highlighted in its declaration as National Historical Site. Local tradition points out that the decoration was thought to bring the sky to the people, so that the faithful, many of them illiterate, could read the faith in the paintings during the long Arctic winter.
Sponsorship and coronation
The title is Our Lady of Good Hope (Notre-Dame-de-Bonne-Esperance), which expresses confidence in the protection of Mary in a remote area of extreme climate. There is no pontifical coronation or basilica title.
Party and devotion
Historical testimonies refer to the fact that the inhabitants of Fort Good Hope attributed to the protection of the Virgin the survival in extreme conditions; it is a tradition of general trust in Mary, without concrete miracles, dated and documented, which therefore do not contain.
Link to the Rosary
The dedication underlines trust in Mary. The Oblate missionaries were very linked to the prayer of the Rosary and to Marian catechesis; however, there is no detailed documentation of co-fradies or specific practices of the Rosary in this temple beyond that ordinary piety.
