Our Lady of Victories (Notre- Dame- des- Victoires)

Marian Advocation of Quebec City (Quebec)
Popular devotion (not officially recognized by the Church)

Origin and history

The name changes respond to documented facts. Following the English attack of Sir William Phips in 1690, Governor Frontenac and the population attributed victory to the protection of the Virgin, and in thanksgiving the church was dedicated to Notre- Dame de la Victoire. In 1711, the failure of another English expedition - with shipwrecks in the San Lorenzo River - motivated the second change of name to Notre-Dame-des-Victoires, already in plural. This providentialist reading of victories is a documented history, preserved in the chronicles and in the change of name itself; that there were specific miraculous interventions belongs more to the field of reading of faith than to the certified miracle.

The image and the sanctuary

The temple is one of the oldest stone churches in North America. Inside it is preserved, hanging from the roof, a model of a volutive ship, offered in thanksgiving for the salvation of a sailor; these marine exvotes are typical of the spirituality of San Lorenzo. There is no canonical coronation of the image.

Sponsorship and coronation

Party and devotion

The specific day-specific patronal party does not consist of the sources consulted, beyond the general Marian parties. The devotion of the place is marked by the historical memory of Marian protection over the city and by the maritime piety of the San Lorenzo, expressed in the exvotes.

Link to the Rosary

A flower for the Virgin

Offer a simple prayer to this Marian devotion. Pray a Hail Mary for Canada and for world peace.

Pray Hail Mary
Sources: tradition of the sanctuary, diocesan information and Wikipedia in Spanish. The distinction between popular piety and documented ecclesial history is specific to this fact sheet; extraordinary accounts are presented as devotion and not as doctrinal pronunciation.
