Our Lady of Arabia, Patron of the Gulf Vicariates

Our Lady of Arabia is the title with which the Church venerates the Virgin Mary as patron of the two apostolic vicariates of the Arabian peninsula, North and South Arabia. Born in Kuwait in 1948 in the heat of Carmelite devotion, the title was confirmed by Pius XII in 1957 and extended to the entire region in 2011; since 2021 its cathedral is raised in Awali (Barein).

🌹 Wonders and anecdotes

  • The venerated image comes from the Carmel tradition: a copy of Our Lady of Mount Carmel taken to Ahmadi (Kuwait) in 1948, whose cedar size of Lebanon was venerated by Pius XII in 1949; the same Pope proclaimed patronage for the bull Regnum Mariae on 25 January 1957.
  • The image received the canonical coronation on March 25, 1960: St. John XXIII personally blessed the gold crown with rubles and diamonds, imposed by Cardinal Valerian Gracias as a papal legacy.
  • On January 5, 2011, with the approval of Benedict XVI, the Congregation for Divine Worship proclaimed Our Lady of Arabia as the principal patron of the then-called vicariates of Kuwait and Arabia - renamed that same year North and South Arabia - and set her feast on the Saturday before the Second Sunday of Ordinary Time.
  • On 10 December 2021 Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle consecrated the Cathedral of Our Lady of Arabia in Awali (Barein), the largest in the Gulf region, on the ground donated by King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa; and in January 2026 the original shrine of Ahmadi was raised to the lower basilica.
