Sanctuary of Our Lady of Arabia of Ahmadi, cradle of the title
In the oil city of Ahmadi, south of Kuwait, devotion to Our Lady of Arabia, now patron of the two apostolic vicariates of the Gulf, was born in 1948. What began as a humble picture of Carmen exposed by a barefoot Carmelite is today a sanctuary raised to the lower basilica, the first of the entire Arabian peninsula.
🌹 Wonders and anecdotes
- On May 1, 1948, Carmelite father Teofano Ubaldo Stella brought to Ahmadi a lithographic copy of the image of Our Lady of Mount Carmel from the Stella Maris de Haifa monastery, and exposed it to public veneration at the feast of the Immaculate of that year.
- On 17 December 1949 Pius XII venerated in the Apostolic Palace the statue of the Virgin with the Child carved in cedar of Lebanon and authorized the title "Our Lady of Arabia"; the image arrived in Kuwait on 6 January 1950. By the bull Regnum Mariae of January 25, 1957, the same Pope proclaimed her patron at the request of Bishop Stella.
- The present church was raised in 1956, with first stone placed on 8 September 1955; the image received the canonical coronation on 25 March 1960, with a crown of gold blessed by St. John XXIII and imposed by Cardinal Valerian Gracias, Archbishop of Bombay, as a papal legacy.
- Lion XIV raised the Ahmadi shrine to the rank of the lower basilica, the first of the Arabian peninsula: the rite was presided over by Cardinal Pietro Parolin on January 16, 2026.
Our Lady of Arabia
In Ahmadi all began: the Carmelite picture of 1948, the blessing of Pius XII and the title that today loves Catholics from all over the Gulf. The original sanctuary of Our Lady of Arabia, crowned in 1960 and lower basilica since 2026, remains the first heart of this devotion.
🙏 Our Lady of Arabia, pray for us.
