Our Lady of the Mace (Madonna dell'Steel, Italy)

Marian devotion

Where is he?

The Sanctuary of the Madonna dell'Econo is in Lizzano in Belvedere, in the Apeninos Boloñeses (Italy). The tab uses the Catholic building identified by OpenStreetMap as Madonna dell'Steel. The coordinate points to the sanctuary, not the tree or the exact place where tradition places vision.

Documented history

Official tourist information in the metropolitan area of Bologna indicates that the sanctuary was built in 1535 and then extended until the 18th century. The current building was built on a first temple related to local veneration. The tradition of the place gave name to the apvocation for the maple under which, according to the account, two shepherds took refuge.

The sanctuary conserves exvotes and a set of wood sculptures known as the Bruners. The tourist information relates these pieces to the family of Commander Brunetto Brunori, who would have survived the battle of Gavinana of 3 August 1530. This data belongs to the devotional history of the devotee; it is not used as proof of the apparition.

Tradition

Tradition tells that two young shepherds were surprised by a snowfall in the middle of summer and found shelter under a maple. There they would have seen the Virgin; one of them, who was born mute, would have regained the speech. The memory of the episode joined an image placed on the tree and, over time, to the temple raised for veneration.

Legend and limits of the record

The summer storm, vision and healing form the legendary and devotional core of the story. The tourist source expressly tells it as legend. That is why the narrative is maintained with this qualification and it is not said that there is a medical investigation or a decree that declares the healing supernatural. The devotees bear witness to the gratitude of the devotees, but they do not on their own certify every grace attributed.

Ecclesial State

It has a Catholic sanctuary with public veneration, pilgrimage and an annual feast on August 5. Registered permitted veneration. The existence of the building and of the celebration documents devotion; it is not presented as formal approval of the supernatural of vision or healing.

Anecdotes and stories

The forest environment is part of the experience of the sanctuary and the route of the pilgrims. On August 5, a party was held with the presence of the faithful and local posts. The collection of exvotes, including the Bruners, retains the memory of people who attributed to Mary's intercession their protection in difficult circumstances. This memory is counted with respect, without turning it into a supernatural opinion.

Prayer

Holy Mary, Mother of Jesus, intercedes for the children, for those who feel helpless and for those who go through an unexpected trial. Help us to seek refuge in God and to protect with love those who need our help. Amen.

The building, the exvotes and the party

The tourist information presents the sanctuary as a simple-style construction, integrated into an environment of trees and mountain roads. Under the main altar the memory of the first temple raised to commemorate the story is preserved. The set of exvotes, and in particular the wood sculptures called Bruners, makes visible the popular gratitude and memory of those who came to the place in times of danger.

The August 5 party brings together cult, local meeting and visitors. The official description also highlights the silence of the forest and the atmosphere of prayer. They are features of the place that help to understand why tradition was maintained, without mixing the spiritual experience of pilgrims with an ecclesial statement on the supernatural of vision or healing.

The memory of Brunori and the party of August 5

The set of exvotes of Madonna dell'Steel retains a specific memory linked to the Brunori family. The official information of the Appennino Bologna account that the family ordered to carve a group of wooden figures to remember that Brunetto Brunori would have miraculously survived the battle of Gavinana, on 3 August 1530. The word "miraculously" belongs to the source's account and is still attributed to that family memory; it is not presented as an independent opinion on the battle or the Marian apparition.

The current building is understood as a result of a long growth: the construction started in 1535 was extended until the 18th century over the place to which the legend links the two pastors and the maple. The image associated with the tree and the temple are not exactly the same material reality. Separating them helps to preserve both the history of the building and the tradition of origin without inventing the position of a tree that can no longer be measured with precision.

Every 5 August many people continue to meet to celebrate the event remembered by the sanctuary. The feast, the forest and the exvotes form a geography of devotion that can be described historically. The pastor's healing and vision remain at the legendary level indicated by the source; public veneration of the image is recorded as permitted, without stating that the Church has approved every episode of the story as supernatural.
