Marian devotion
Where is he?
The Sanctuary of Madonna dell'Aiuto is in Segonzano, province of Trento, in the valley of Cembra (Italy). The coordinate points to the cult building identified by OpenStreetMap as Santuario della Madonna dell’Aiuto. The tab uses "Our Lady of Help" as an explanatory translation of Madonna dell’Aiuto and retains the Italian name in the sources.
Documented history
Institutional tourist sources describe the venerated image as a painting made between 1682 and 1683. This is a copy of the image of the Mariahilf associated with Lucas Cranach and preserved in Innsbruck, commissioned for Segonzano by Baron Francesco Ferdinando to Prato. The existence of the painting, its placement in a chapel and the continuity of the sanctuary are part of the documented history of the place.
The information from Visit Trentino indicates that the sanctuary was recognized as such in 1820 and that the whole had an expansion in 1961. These dates describe the evolution of the building and its veneration. They do not mean that the miraculous powers associated with the image have been certified in a supernatural process. The current building is therefore a Catholic pilgrimage site whose history can be followed through painting, reforms and religious attention.
Tradition
The tradition tells that the painting appeared in a forest and that, after being withdrawn, it would have returned to the same place. The account explains the choice of the site and the special relationship of the image with the mountain and the community of Segonzano. The pilgrims have transmitted it as a sign that Mary wanted to be venerated there, but the fact sheet presents it as tradition, not as a contemporary historical act to the first episode.
Legend and limits of the record
The repeated return of the picture to the forest belongs to the legendary core of the sanctuary. The sources do allow to document the origin of the painting, its approximate date, the title of the sanctuary and the stages of its building; they do not allow to verify with the same degree of safety the prodigious itinerary of the image. Nor does it contain a formal file that declares concrete miracles associated with the Madonna dell'Aiuto.
Ecclesial State
Consta permitted venerationThere is a Catholic sanctuary recognized and presented as a place of visit and prayer for the institutional sources of Trentino. This state refers to public veneration and the life of the sanctuary. It does not amount to a supernatural approval of the legend of the forest or of every grace attributed to the intercession of the Virgin.
Anecdotes and stories
The title of Madonna dell'Aiuto is part of a wide European family of images of Mary as Help. In Segonzano this devotion was realized in a painting of Central European tradition, in a mountain sanctuary and in a community that preserved its memory through successive reforms. The extension of 1961 shows that the place is not just a piece of the past: it remains a space of prayer and reception for visitors.
Prayer
Holy Mary, Mother of Jesus and Help of Christians, intercede for those who feel lost or without strength. Teach us to ask for help with humility and to offer it with generosity, so that our devotion will be translated into concrete charity. Amen.
Sources
The image and the sanctuary
The reference to Mariahilf by Lucas Cranach places the painting of Segonzano within a recognizable iconographic tradition. The tourist source does not present the work as an apparition of Mary, but as a copy taken to the place between 1682 and 1683 and later turned into a center of veneration. This distinction helps to understand that a Marian sanctuary can be born around a painted image and the trust of a community, without its history being described as an apricionist phenomenon.
It is also significant that Trentino's documentation speaks separately of the painting, the recognition of the sanctuary in 1820 and the extension of 1961. They are different layers: the first one belongs to the history of the work; the second, to the institutional consolidation of the place; the third, to the capacity of the building to continue to host faithful. The tradition of the forest expresses the way the community interprets the permanence of the image, but does not replace these verifiable references.
Anyone who visits Segonzano can pray before the image and ask for the intercession of the Virgin, while respecting the difference between veneration and veneration. The fact sheet does not deny the spiritual meaning of the sanctuary for its pilgrims; it only avoids turning devotional memory into a historical or ecclesial affirmation that the sources consulted do not support.
