Marian devotion
Where is he?
The Patriarchal monastery of Our Lady of Balamand is located in Balamand, in the district of Koura, in northern Lebanon and near Tripoli. The Greek-Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch presents it as a monastery dedicated to the Virgin Mary and to St. George. The map uses the geographical reference of Wikidata Q1774990 and retains accuracy locality, because the coordinate identifies the monastic set and its location, not a specific building of the compound.
Balamand should not be confused with Qannoubine, Kaftoun or other Lebanese Marian monasteries. They share an Eastern Christian geography and a devotion to the Mother of God, but they are different places and therefore each has its own tab and its own point.
Documented history
The Patriarchate of Antioch explains that the name Balamand comes from Belmont, a name linked to the Cistercian monks who founded an abbey there in 1157. Our Lady's church was the center of the complex. The Cistercian stage left its own architecture and history, which were assumed and transformed by the subsequent continuity of the place.
The same source has been the center of an anti-oquen Orthodox monastery dedicated to the Virgin Mary and to St. George since 1603. The restoration of monastic life is related to Abbot Makarios al-Dirani and monks from other communities. The official source mentions the organization of the land, the cultivation of vineyards, purple and olive trees and the hospitality offered by the monastery to visitors and refugees. These are data from the institutional memory of the Patriarchy and are presented as such.
Since the 20th century, Balamand has also become a religious and educational complex. The Patriarchate mentions the school, the Institute of Theology of San Juan Damasceno and the University of Balamand, founded in 1988. These institutions show that the place is not only a medieval monument: it continues to be part of the life of the Orthodox Church of Antioch.
Tradition
The Church of Our Lady retains the cult of the Mother of God within the anti-oquine Orthodox tradition. The monastery is a place of prayer and contemplation and celebrates the Marian festivals of its calendar. The veneration of Mary is understood as an honor to the Mother of God and as a request for intercession; it is not worship, which corresponds only to the Lord.
The patriarchal source also mentions an icon of the Virgin Hodegetria conserved next to the iconostasian, dated by the institution in 1318 although with proposals of an earlier date. This difference remains a historical-artistic question: it does not become the oldest attribution to certainty and does not present the icon as an apparition.
Legend
There is no local Marian apparition linked to Balamand or a Catholic judgment of supernatural phenomena. The devotional reputation of the icon and the tradition of its favors belong to the Orthodox religious life of the monastery. When a source does not allow to verify a concrete miracle, the formula "does not contain" is retained and a tradition is not transformed into history.
Ecclesial State
The state indicated is other _ church: Balamand belongs to the Orthodox Church of Antioch. The existence of the monastery, its veneration and its institutional history are documented by the Patriarchate and by the monastery itself. This fact sheet does not present these data as the approval of the Catholic Church or as a declaration of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith.
Anecdotes and stories
The continuity of Balamand brings together several layers of history: a 12th-century Cistercian abbey, an Orthodox recovery from the place since modern times, agricultural communities and a contemporary educational network. The transformation does not erase any stage; it helps to understand why the same space can preserve medieval Latin Catholic memory and today's anti-oquine Orthodox life.
Hospitality appears as a repeated note in the institutional history of the monastery. The Patriarchate recalls the reception of travellers and refugees, while the educational centre is related to theological and cultural training. It is not said that this hospitality is a miracle: it is a historical practice and a concrete form of Christian service.
Prayer
Holy Mary, Mother of God, intercedes before the Lord for Balamand, for the monks and students, for the Churches of the East and for all who seek refuge. Take us to Jesus Christ, teach us hospitality and keep Lebanon in peace. Amen.
