Our Lady of Bon- Find

Marian devotion

Where is he?

The basilica of Our Lady of Bon- Encontre is located in Bon-Encontre, next to Agen, in the department of Lot-et-Garonne, region of Nueva Aquitaine, France. The point of the map corresponds to the cult building identified by OpenStreetMap as Basilique Notre-Dame. It is not presented as the exact place of each episode transmitted by tradition, but as the cartographic reference of the basilica that preserves the venerated image.

Documented history

The municipal history of Bon- Encontre places the origin of devotion in an area of crops from the early 16th century. The first oratory was blessed on August 27, 1551; since then the pilgrimages began. The same source distinguishes this historical data from the traditional narrative from the finding of the statue and describes how the place was taking shape as a Marian cult center.

Next to the first oratory a church was built in 1600, completed in 1604. Between 1611 and the Revolution the pilgrimage was attended by religious members linked to the fraternity of the Third Order of San Francisco, whose convent of Bon-Encontre had been founded by Margarita de Valois. When the church was small in the mid-19th century, the present basilica was raised.

The historical statuette is preserved, according to municipal information, in a relic located behind the main altar. The continuity of the pilgrimages suffered a brake during the Revolution, but local memory describes a devotion that has been continuing for centuries and which brings together especially the faithful during the month of May, traditionally dedicated to Mary.

Tradition

The story tells that Jacques Frayssinet, a shepherd of a family of farmers, observed that one of his oxen was moving away from the flock and kneeling in front of a bush. There he would have found a small image of the Virgin with the Child. The mother would have pronounced an expression of surprise related to a "good rencontre," and that name was attached to the image and the place. The existence of the name, the statuette and the cult is preserved in local history; the supernatural way of finding belongs to tradition.

Legend

The narrative adds that the statue disappeared from the house and that it returned to the bush after being taken to the church and even to the sacrary. The priest would have consulted the bishop and decided to leave her in the site of the find, first in a hornadine and then in an oratory. The municipal source presents this episode as a legend; there is no contemporary record here to make the prodigy a proven miracle.

Ecclesial State

They have a Catholic basilica, a public cult and a tradition of Marian pilgrimage documented by municipal and diocesan sources. A formal decree declaring supernatural the finding, the behavior of the ox or the return of the image is not included in the cross-cutting sources. This is why the fact sheet distinguishes the permitted cult from the foundational legend and does not present the story as an approved apparition.

Anecdotes and stories

The history of the sanctuary brings together several stages: the 1551 oratory, the church of the early 17th century, Franciscan attention, the revolutionary interruption and the construction of the present basilica. It also shows how a local cult can be integrated into the life of a city and its region without each devotional account having to become a historical affirmation.

Prayer

Holy Mary, Our Lady of Bon- Find, intercede before Jesus Christ for those who pilgrim, for families and for those who seek comfort. Teach us to guard faith with humility, to distinguish history from tradition and to turn every grace received into service and charity. Amen.
