Marian devotion
Where is he?
Our Lady of the Canoa is a Marian advocation linked to the municipality of Beltrán, in the Colombian department of Cundinamarca, next to the Magdalena River. The municipal documentation preserved in the repository of the High School of Public Administration mentions the temple raised for its veneration and the feast of September 8. The mapping consultation of OpenStreetMap identifies the municipality of Beltran, but does not return an unequivocal geometry of the church; therefore the point of the map is placed in the town, at 4,7993, -74,7408, with precision locality. This point is not presented as the exact GPS of the temple or as the exact place of the traditional scene.
Documented history
The Development Plan 2004- 2007 of the municipality of Beltrán retains references to the Virgin of the Canoe within the symbols and cultural memory of the population. The document includes the image of the Virgin in the explanation of the municipal shield and describes a church dedicated to it. It also records the annual celebration of 8 September. These data document the presence of the advocation in the public and religious life of Beltran, although they do not provide a complete date of construction of the temple or a canonical file on the supernatural origin of the story.
The church is described in the sources gathered as a historical and cultural temple of the municipality. Its relationship with the Magdalena River explains that the canoe is part of the name and the local memory. The documentation consulted does not allow it to be stated that an original canvas is retained, who did it or at what exact date the construction was started; these data remain as no consta.
Tradition
The tradition of Beltran tells that a woman who washed or collected water in the river would have seen the Virgin approach in a canoe, accompanied by two angels. The story appears in the municipal plan as a narrative of the memory of the people and is related to the September 8 feast. History is presented here as a local tradition: it expresses the way a community remembers its devotion, but it does not become a proven historical fact.
The same account associates devotion with the protection of those who live from the river and from fishing. The landscape of Magdalena, the canoes and the life of the ports are part of the cultural context of the advocation. The municipal source even retains references to legend within the cultural elements known to the community.
Legend
The apparition of the Virgin to the woman of the river belongs to the local tradition and legend according to the cross-cutting documentation. There is no decree of ecclesial authority that declares the apparition supernatural, nor a canonical recognition of the details of the account. No miracle is added as approved. The existence of the temple and the feast proves public veneration, not the approval of a private revelation.
Ecclesial State
Se registra permitted veneration in the limited sense of a Marian advocation publicly venerated in a temple and a local feast. The municipal document describes the Church of the Virgin of the Canoe and its veneration. There is no specific ecclesial approval of the narrated apparition; therefore the state of the supernatural phenomenon is without documented pronunciation and is not presented as approved.
Anecdotes and stories
September 8 is the date that Beltran's memory links to the Virgin of the Canoe. The municipal document retains the narrative of the meeting by the river and relates it to the temple that exists in the municipality. The canoe is also integrated into the symbols and river culture of Beltran, so that the advocation cannot be separated from the social history of Magdalena. No figures are added for pilgrims, witness names or restoration dates that the sources consulted do not document accurately.
Prayer
Santa María de la Canoa, pray for the families of Beltran and for those who work and sail on the Magdalena River. Teach us to guard the memory of our peoples, to help us in difficulties and to always walk towards your Son Jesus. He presents to him our pleas and accompanies us with your intercession. Amen.

Documentary expansion: municipal memory and map scope
The Development Plan 2004- 2007 of Beltran is a municipal source: it retains the presence of the Virgin of the Canoe in the symbols, the cultural memory and the feast of the people. Its value for this fact sheet is to document a local public devotion and the temple that the community recognizes; it does not in itself amount to a decree approving an apparition, nor does it offer a complete chronology of construction.
The same caution applies to cartography. OpenStreetMap allows the location of Beltrán, while the municipal source provides the cultural link to the Magdalena River. In the absence of an unequivocal temple geometry in the archived responses, the marker remains accurate locality. The canoe, the river and the feast of 8 September are preserved as documented elements of Beltran's memory, without adding witnesses, figures of pilgrims or dates of restoration that do not show.
