Documented history
The source of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of the Philippines identifies the image as Our Lady of Charity of Agoo and places it in its minor basilica and diocesan sanctuary of Agoo. The article reports that Pope Francis granted canonical coronation to the Marian image.
On June 5, 2024, Bishop Daniel Presto of San Fernando de La Unión reported that the request for pontifical coronation had been approved by the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments by a decree dated April 20, 2024. The news also explains that, at the time of its publication, the diocese had not yet announced the date of the ceremony. Coronation is a recognition of the importance of an image for Christian piety; it does not automatically make all devotional narrations associated with it historical.
Devotion and ecclesial state
Veneration allowed, with canonical coronation granted. The existence of the minor basilica and the diocesan sanctuary, together with the coronation decree communicated by the diocesan bishop, documents a public Catholic cult.
