Marian devotion
Where is he?
Our Lady of the Carmen of Mocejón is to be seen in the chapel of the Carmen of the parish church of San Esteban Protomártir, in Mocejón, province of Toledo, Castilla-La Mancha. The map's coordinate is that of the town of Mocejón obtained from OpenStreetMap. It does not appear as the exact GPS of the chapel, because the cartographic consultation did not return an unequivocal entity of the parish building.
Documented history
Devotion has a brotherhood whose ordinances are preserved in the Diocesan Archive of Toledo and are dated 1659. The pastoral document of the Archdiocese of Toledo explains that the community celebrates the feast of Carmen on July 16 and that there is also a celebration around the Sweet Name of Mary in September. The source relates this second party to the agricultural tradition of the people, whose neighbors could not always leave the countryside in July.
The 19th century especially marked the memory of the advocation. The parish records cited in the pastoral letter document that the cholera epidemic of 1834 caused numerous deaths in Mochejón; the source itself is 362 dead. After the end of the epidemic, the people agreed to celebrate on July 16 with solemnity. The source presents this agreement as a memory of thanksgiving and as a growth of devotion; it does not make it a medical demonstration of a miracle.
In 1936 the altars of the parish church were destroyed and objects of worship were burned or stolen, according to the file of the National Historical Archive cited by the Archdiocese. The old image, a size of polychrome wood, was lost. A serial image of the cast was then received and, some years later, the City Council acquired a much older size that had been venerated in a particular chapel. The image received today by the main cult is 1.40 meters, is carved and polychrome, and holds the Child Jesus on the left arm.
Tradition
Some testimonies claim that the currently venerated image survived the Civil War hidden in a haystack. The Archdiocese presents it as a testimony, not as an independent evidence dated at the time of the events. Also part of the local tradition is the memory grateful for the end of the epidemic and the singing of some coplillas before the image every July 16.
Legend
The tradition of the intercession of the Virgin during the epidemic belongs to the religious memory of Mocejon. The fact sheet does not state that a cure or the cessation of the disease is a miracle recognized by the Church. In the same way, the account of the hajar is preserved with the caution that requires a news transmitted by subsequent testimonies.
Ecclesial State
It is a public Catholic cult in the parish of San Esteban Protomártir and a canonical coronation of the image celebrated by the Archdiocese of Toledo on May 6, 2023. The diocesan documentation itself explains that canonical coronation is a liturgical and pastoral rite; it does not amount to declaring a supernatural account of apparition or a miracle. There is no separate pronunciation on apparitions in the sources consulted.
Anecdotes and stories
The chapel retains elements of the recent history of devotion: retouches made in the 1990s, an arch, tiles with scenes of the procession and a fence dated in the 17th century. The July 16 party brings together neighbors, former inhabitants and people from nearby localities. The City Council describes a procession with the image under a gilded bow and the coplillas that remember the relationship between the advocation and local history.
Prayer
Virgin of Carmen de Mocejon, Mother of Jesus and intercessor of your people, pray for the families, for the sick and for those who work the earth. Teach us to thank the goods received without confusing faith with superstition, and to live the charity your Son sends us. Take those who seek comfort and always take us to Christ. Amen.
