Marian devotion
Where is he?
The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Castelmonte, also called Madone di Mont y Stara Gora in the Slovenian area, it is located in the town of Castelmonte, municipality of Prepotto, province of Udine, Friul- Venice Julia (Italy). The coordinate corresponds to the cult building identified by OpenStreetMap and not to the center of the entire mountain.
Documented history
The documentation of the sanctuary retains medieval references. The Archdiocese of Udine recalls that a document of 1244 already presents the church of Santa Maria del Monte as a place of importance within the former Patriarchate of Aquilea. The historical page of the sanctuary also contains news about the construction, the transformations of the whole and the continuity of the cult at the site.
The venerated image and the building have gone through changes, conflicts and restorations. The current statue and the architecture surrounding it are the result of a long history, in which the devotion of local communities joined the pilgrimages from the nearby valleys. The coronation of the image in the 20th century is part of the documented cultural history, but it should not be confused with a statement that each tradition of origin is supernatural.
Tradition
The stories of the place go back to the Marian veneration to very ancient times and link the mountain to the protection of the population. The tradition of pilgrims sees Castelmonte as a meeting point between Italian, Friulan and Slovenian cultures. The memory of the sanctuary has been transmitted along with paths, feasts, vows and prayers in the image of Mary.
Legend and limits of the record
Some narrations bring the origin of the sanctuary to the early Christian centuries or relate it directly to the Council of Ephesus. The antiquity of veneration and archaeological remains alone do not allow each detail of these stories to be affirmed. This fact sheet retains the distinction: medieval documents and the building belong to history; explanations of the first origin are presented as tradition or legend when the sources do not allow them to be verified with precision.
Ecclesial State
Consta permitted veneration. The Archdiocese of Udine includes Castelmonte among its Jubilee churches and encourages the pilgrimage to the sanctuary. The image is the object of public Catholic veneration and liturgical celebration. This state does not claim that there is an approved concrete apparition or that all the graces attributed to the intercession of Mary have been recognized as miracles.
Anecdotes and stories
Castelmonte has been the destination of pilgrims of the Friulan valleys and of nearby Slovenian communities. The position of the sanctuary explains its cross-border dimension: the place does not belong only to a local memory, even if it is preserved with special affection in the nearby parishes. The diocesan invitation to pilgrim there shows that the sanctuary remains integrated into contemporary pastoral life.
Prayer
Holy Mary, Mother of Jesus, the protector and consolation of the pilgrims, intercedes for those who cross mountains, borders and difficulties. May our traditions lead us to truth, peace and the service of all. Amen.

A sanctuary between history and border
Castelmonte is located in an area where languages and historical borders have been in contact for centuries. The Italian name Castle, la friulana Madone di Mont y la eslovena Stara Gora They do not describe three different places, but one sanctuary with various cultural forms of naming it. This plurality helps to understand its pilgrimage dimension and avoids reducing it to a single national reading.
The medieval reference of 1244 is important because it shows that the place already had relevance in the documented history of the Patriarchate of Aquilea. It does not allow us to go back automatically to an apostolic date or to confirm all traditional reconstructions. Archaeology, architecture and documents can show the antiquity of a site; the interpretation of the foundation accounts requires a distinction between history, tradition and legend.
The image and the pilgrimage
The veneration of the image has been expressed in celebrations, coronation, vows and visits of communities of the valleys. The mountain, the roads and the sanctuary form a unity: the pilgrim comes not only to contemplate a building, but to enter into a practice of prayer received from previous generations. This continuity is a cultural and historical fact. It is not used to state that any account of protection, healing or Marian intervention has been submitted to a canonical process.
The inclusion of Castelmonte in the Jubilee life of the Archdiocese confirms its present place within the Catholic cult. The fact sheet therefore uses "permitted veneration" and leaves open the question of supernatural origins that do not contain. Prudence does not diminish the value of the sanctuary: it protects pilgrims from confusing Mary's legitimate veneration with undocumented statements and allows local history to be transmitted with respect.
