Marian devotion
Our Lady of Allende
Ezcaray Patron (La Rioja)
On the hillside of Mount San Torcuato, on the other side of the river Oja, the Allende hermitage keeps the patron of Ezcaray, a Gothic size accompanied by a very rare collection of arcabuceros angels coming from the Virreinato of Peru.
Origin and history
The image of Our Lady of Allende is a Gothic size of the Virgin with the Child, dating back to the 14th century and before the current building. The hermitage is a baroque work of the XVII-XVIII centuries, dating back to 1710, of silery and masonry, with three-section ship, cruise and rectangular header, raised on the right bank of the river Oja. The environment of Ezcaray already appears in medieval documents - such as the forum granted by Fernando IV in 1312 to the valley of Ojacastro -, a framework of the antiquity of the population and the cult, although there is no developed Marian legend of apparition or finding.
The cult of the Virgin of Allende is closely linked to agricultural life: on the day following its feast, the farmers dedicate their thanksgiving to it. The devotion is articulated around a solemn ninth, during which the image is reduced in procession to the parish of Ezcaray in late August or early September and returns to the sanctuary on September 24. The hermitage of custody, in addition, is a unique collection in Spain of ten arcabucero angels, oils of the XVII@-@ XVIII centuries of the school of the Virreinate of Peru, donated by the Archbishop of Lima Pedro Antonio Barroeta and Angel.
Canonical coronation: not found in the sources.
