Origin and history

Our Lady of Altamira is the patron saint of Miranda de Ebro, venerated in the Church of Santa María de Altamira, in the historic center; the current church was built in the 16th century with late Gothic elements. The original image, dating from between the 13th and 14th centuries, was lost in the fire of 1936, and the current one is a replica from 1980.

It is a deeply rooted popular devotion, with a novena, offerings, and solemn ceremonies around September 12th. Its connection to the Rosary is strong: the Confraternity of Our Lady of Altamira organizes the Dawn Rosaries in May and September, and the Holy Rosary procession is a key part of the festivities.
