Marian devotion
Our Lady of Arabia
Patron of Apostolic Vicariate of Kuwait
Recognized by the Church
The devotion was born in Kuwait in the late 1940s, when barefoot Carmelites arrived from Iraq served the growing foreign Catholic population linked to the oil industry. On May 1, 1948, a Marian lithography was enthroned in Ahmadi, inspired by the image of the Stella Maris monastery of Haifa, and on December 8 of that year the chapel of Ahmadi was dedicated to the Virgin, a gesture considered the formal start of the advocation. The main driver was Carmelite P. Teophane Ubaldo Stella, the first Apostolic Prefect of Kuwait, who sought an image capable of uniting Catholics from many countries in a predominantly Muslim environment.

The image and the sanctuary
The image is inspired by the iconography of the Virgin of Carmen; in the face of the growth of devotion a new statue was carved in cedar of Lebanon, blessed by Pope Pius XII on December 17, 1949. The original sanctuary is in Kuwait, where devotion was consolidated; the Kuwaiti church of Our Lady of Arabia was raised to minor basilica in 2025. The advocation remains very present in the Cathedral of the Sagrada Familia of Kuwait City, where it usually has its own image and liturgical acts.
Sponsorship and coronation
By Decree Regnum Mariae (25 January 1957), Pius XII declared her the principal patron of the Apostolic Vicariate of Kuwait. At the mandate of John XXIII, his canonical coronation was held on 25 March 1960, chaired by Cardinal Valeriano Gracias. On January 5, 2011, the Congregation for Divine Veneration proclaimed her as patron of the Apostolic Vicariate of North Arabia, and shortly thereafter she was recognized as patron of the entire Arabian peninsula.
Party and devotion
His party was set on the Saturday before the second Sunday of Ordinary Time, in mid-January, with permission to celebrate also Friday or Sunday. Devotion is lived as a sign of unity, refuge and comfort for migrant workers; many faithful entrust work, family and legal difficulties. They do not contain miracles subject to canonical process, but devotional protection accounts.
Link to the Rosary
The Gulf faithful hold their faith above all through the prayer of the Rosary, often in small groups of compatriots. In the great solemnities of Our Lady of Arabia, the Rosary, especially nocturnal, is being watched by those who work in the day. The Rosary is the main channel of this Marian migrant devotion.
