Marian devotion
Our Lady of Argeme
Patroness of Coria and the Diocese Coria- Cáceres
The Baroque shrine of Argeme, outside of Coria, keeps the patron of the city and its diocese, a devotion that the city celebrates with the solemn "coming" from the Virgin to Coria.
Origin and history
The Foro de Coria, from the 13th century, already mentions the place where today the sanctuary rises, which testifies to an earlier medieval chapel, extended in the 16th century to accommodate the image. The present temple is a baroque construction of the 17th and 18th centuries, jewel of the extreme baroque with colonial imprint, declared a National Historical-Artistic Monument in 1983. The venerated image is a Roman-Gothic size, possibly from Leonese workshops, covered by another 1830 image and guarded in a 1880 shrimp with a 1774 rocky altarpiece. The Venerable and Pontifical Brotherhood of Our Lady of Argeme, in charge of worship, is located around 1620.
The Virgin of Argeme is the patron of Coria for an immemorial devotion and patron of the diocese of Coria- Cáceres for the concession of Leo XIII. The pleas have been documented since the 17th century. The most characteristic of her devotion is the "coming" of the Virgin to Coria: the image comes out of the sanctuary and remains a few days in the city, amid liturgical and popular celebrations: first every four years and, since the end of the 20th century, every year. Tradition dates back to the time of the Reconquest, without documentation that sets an exact date.
Own liturgical party and canonical coronation: they are not safely recorded in the sources.
