The parish of Bishkek
The Catholic parish of Bishkek is one of the most important faith communities in Kyrgyzstan. Founded in the 19th century, the parish has served the Catholics of the region for generations.
Our Lady of the Nomads
The image of Our Lady of the Nomads is a wooden carving depicting the Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus, surrounded by yurts and horses. Tradition says that the Virgin appeared to a nomad from Bishkek during a terrible storm in the Tian Shan Mountains.
"The Virgin of the Nomads protects the shepherds of Kyrgyzstan on their journeys through the mountains."
Local anecdotes
The people of Bishkek recount that during the Soviet era, parishioners secretly gathered to pray the Rosary before an image of Our Lady of the Nomads. Despite the persecution, their faith never died, and the faithful attributed this to the protection of the Virgin Mary.
Prayer
O Virgin of the Nomads, protector of shepherds. You who watch over those who travel through the mountains, intercede for us before your Son Jesus. Protect the people of Kyrgyzstan and guide us toward peace. Amen.
