Our Lady of Butarque
Patrona de Leganés (Madrid) · crowned in 2017
In her hermitage of Leganés, the Virgin of Butarque - the patron and honorary mayor of the city, crowned canonically in 2017 - is the star of an emotional process transfer every year to the church of San Salvador.
Origin and history
The Virgin of Butarque is venerated in her hermitage, next to the parish cemetery of Leganés, a building dated 1536. She is a patron of the city and her honorary mayor. It was crowned canonically in 2017 by the bishop of Getafe, Joaquín María López de Andújar, with the bull of Pope Francis, a milestone that solemnly recognized his devotion.
Its most characteristic feature is the processional transfer of the image from the hermitage to the church of San Salvador de Leganés on the day of its feast, with return after its hermitage, where it remains most of the year. The devotion to Butarque is a sign of the identity of the Legians.
