Our Lady of Cadeiras
Sanctuary of the Ribeira Sacra · Sober (Lugo)
In the heart of Ribeira Sacra, the Baroque shrine of Cadeiras is a "Milagreira" Virgin, who is called by rosemary from all over the region to seek health, especially from rare diseases.
Origin and history
The present sanctuary is a Galician baroque temple built between 1780 and 1794, of a single ship and Latin cross plant, which was unfinished - the project envisaged two towers and only one was raised -, in an enclosure closed by porticos that dominates the canyon of the Sil. Tradition points to a previous pagan cult in the place, Christianized with the sanctuary, presented as a belief, not as a firm fact.
The most prominent devotional note is the fame of the Virgin of Cadeiras as "milagreira": one of the most well-known pilgrimage shrines of the Ribeira Sacra, to which rosemary seek healing, especially from rare diseases. The main rosemary is held on 7, 8 and 9 September. A legend links it to "three sister virgins" with shrines that see each other.
Formal patronage and canonical coronation: not found in the sources.
