Marian devotion
Our Lady of Carrasconte
Patron saint of Babia and Laciana (León)
On the border between the Leonese regions of Babia and Laciana, a mountain sanctuary guards Our Lady of Carrasconte, shared patron saint of both valleys; every August 15th the candle is lit with a night march of torches and a floral offering at midnight.
Origin and history
The sanctuary stands on the border between Babia and Laciana, with parts of the building in each region, a symbol of the shared devotion of both valleys. Its documented history is based on documents from the parish archives of Piedrafita de Babia dated 1602 and 1634, and a reference from 1639 in which a visitor ordered the image to be "gilded and painted." In the 18th century, the church was enlarged due to the influx of faithful. The current image is not the original: the original was destroyed in 1936, and the carving venerated today is a 1946 copy made from an archival photograph.
Tradition places the origin of the cult in the 9th century, when the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to a shepherd, giving him the image and asking him to build a hermitage there; a tale rooted in popular piety. Our Lady of Carrasconte is venerated as the patron saint of Babia and Laciana, with strong symbolic significance for regional unity. Her pilgrimage on August 15th, declared a Provincial Tourist Interest, includes a moving torchlight procession the night before and a floral offering at midnight.
Canonical coronation: not found in the sources.
