Marian devotion
Our Lady of Codés
Torralba del Río · Sierra de Codés (Navarre)
At the foot of the mountains of Codés, in the border territory with La Rioja and Álava, the sanctuary of Torralba del Río has been gathering for centuries the romaneries of the villages of three lands around a Gothic image.
Origin and history
The present sanctuary was raised in several phases between the 16th and 18th centuries on a previous building, and its devotion reached great spread since the 16th century, with apogee in the 17th and 18th centuries. He suffered serious damage in the first Carlist War, when he was looted in 1837, and began to recover in the early 20th century.
The image that presides over the sanctuary is a Gothic size from the mid-14th century. The tradition places its origin in a prodigious finding in the saw, related by the legend to the destruction of the ancient city of Cantabria and the concealment of the image; the University of Navarra stresses that this story is mythical and well before the size preserved. It is an important pilgrimage center for the villages of Navarra, La Rioja and Álava, with Romeries in Pentecost and on September 8.
Proper liturgical feast and canonical coronation: not found in the sources.
