Our Lady of Copenhagen
Copenhagen, Denmark
The Virgin Mary in the capital of Denmark, where the Catholic faith has endured despite being a minority.
The Cathedral of Saint Ansgar
St. Ansgar's Cathedral is the most important Catholic church in Denmark. Built in the 19th century, the cathedral is the center of Catholic life in a predominantly Lutheran country.
Our Lady of the North Sea
The image of Our Lady of the North Sea is a wooden carving depicting the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus, surrounded by ships and waves. Tradition says that the Virgin appeared to a Danish fisherman during a terrible storm in the North Sea.
"Our Lady of the North Sea protects the Danes on their sea voyages."
Popular devotions
The faithful in Copenhagen flock to the cathedral to light candles for the Virgin Mary and ask for her protection. The most popular tradition is that of the "Wishes of the Virgin": faithful write their petitions on slips of paper and place them in a special box next to the image of the Virgin.
Prayer
O Virgin of the North Sea, protector of the Danes. You who watch over those who sail the northern seas, intercede for us before your Son Jesus. Protect the people of Denmark and guide us to peace. Amen.
