Our Lady of Escardiel
Mudejar Sanctuary of Castilblanco de los Arroyos (Sevilla)
In a mudéjar hermitage of the saw, Our Lady of Escardiel - a small fernandina Gothic size - congregates each September one of the most popular romanias of Western Andalusia.
Origin and history
The Escardiel hermitage is a small two-ship mudejar building with wooden crafts, on a site of medieval occupation. The image is a fernandino or alfonsino-style sedent gothic size, dated back to the 13th century, very reformed in the 17th century to adapt it to the image of dress; the current Child, of lead, is attributed to Juan de Mesa. The tradition links its origin to the reconquest of Seville (1248), with a San Fernando "sowing images of the Virgin," and to the apparition of a shepherd; it is presented as uncertain origins.
The first documentation of the fellowship is 1544. Its rosemary, very rooted in the province of Seville and declared the National Tourist Interest Party of Andalusia, is celebrated on the second weekend of September and is considered one of the most important of the Western Andalusia, preceded by the feast of "El Puente."
Formal canonical patronage and canonical coronation: not recorded in the sources.
