The Virgin of Steel
The image of Our Lady of Steel is a wooden carving depicting the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus, surrounded by mining tools. Tradition says that the Virgin appeared to a miner from Esch-sur-Alzette during an accident in the iron mine.
"The Virgin of Steel protects the miners of Luxembourg in their dangerous work."
Local anecdotes
The inhabitants of Esch-sur-Alzette recount that during World War II, parishioners gathered to pray the Rosary before the image of Our Lady of Steel. Despite the German occupation, the church remained undamaged, a fact the faithful attributed to the protection of the Virgin Mary.
Prayer
O Virgin of Steel, protector of miners. You who watch over those who work in the mines, intercede for us before your Son Jesus. Protect the people of Luxembourg and guide us toward peace. Amen.
