The Virgin Mary in Azerbaijan's second largest city, where the Catholic faith has endured despite being a minority.
The parish of Ganja
The Catholic parish of Ganja is one of the most important faith communities in Azerbaijan. Founded in the 19th century, the parish has served the Catholics of the region for generations.
The Virgin of the Caucasus
The image of Our Lady of the Caucasus is a wooden carving depicting the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus, surrounded by mountains and rivers. Tradition says that the Virgin appeared to a shepherd from Ganja during a terrible storm in the Caucasus Mountains.
"Our Lady of the Caucasus protects the shepherds of Azerbaijan on their journeys through the mountains."
Local anecdotes
The people of Ganja recount that during the Soviet era, parishioners secretly gathered to pray the Rosary before an image of Our Lady of the Caucasus. Despite the persecution, their faith never died, and the faithful attributed this to the protection of the Virgin Mary.
Prayer
O Virgin of the Caucasus, protector of shepherds. You who watch over those who travel through the mountains, intercede for us before your Son Jesus. Protect the people of Azerbaijan and guide us toward peace. Amen.
