Marian devotion
Our Lady of Gothenburg
Gothenburg, Sweden
The Virgin Mary in Sweden's second largest city, where the Catholic faith has been reborn among immigrants.
The parish of Gothenburg
The Catholic parish of Gothenburg is one of the most vibrant faith communities in Sweden. Founded in the 19th century, the parish has served the region's Catholics for generations.
The Virgin of the Port
The image of Our Lady of the Port is a wooden carving depicting the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus, surrounded by ships and anchors. Tradition says that the Virgin appeared to a sailor from Gothenburg during a terrible storm in the Kattegat.
"The Virgin of the Port protects the sailors of Gothenburg on their voyages across the North Sea."
Local anecdotes
The people of Gothenburg recount that during World War II, parishioners gathered to pray the Rosary before the image of Our Lady of the Harbor. Despite the bombings, the church remained undamaged, and the faithful attributed this to the protection of the Virgin Mary.
Prayer
O Virgin of the Port, protector of sailors. You who watch over those who sail the northern seas, intercede for us before your Son Jesus. Protect the people of Sweden and guide us toward peace. Amen.
