The Catholic parish of Gyumri is one of the most important communities of faith in Armenia. Founded in the 19th century, the parish has served the Catholics of the region for generations.
The Virgin of the Border
The image of the Virgin of the Border is a wooden size that represents the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus, surrounded by mountains and fortresses. Tradition says that the Virgin appeared to a soldier of Gyumri during a terrible battle on the border with Turkey.

Local anecdotes
The inhabitants of Gyumri tell that during the 1988 earthquake, the faithful of the parish gathered to pray the Rosary before the image of the Virgin of the Border. Despite the destruction, the church suffered no damage, and the faithful attributed it to the protection of the Virgin Mary.

Oh, Virgin of the Border, protector of the soldiers. You who veils for those who defend their land, intercede for us before your Son Jesus. It protects the inhabitants of Armenia and guides us to peace. Amen.
