Our Lady of Hornuez

Sanctuary of the Land of Maderuelo (Moral of Hornuez, Segovia)

In a clearing of the sabinar of Hornuez, a great Baroque sanctuary keeps the patron of the Maderuelo Land; tradition links to an apparition on a juniper in 1246, whose trunk is still preserved next to the image.

Origin and history

The sanctuary is a baroque temple of Greek cross and herriian style, built between 1683 and 1692 on a medieval temple, on the sabinar of Hornuez; it has been a good cultural interest since 1995. In 1913 a fire by the fall of a ray destroyed the original Romanesque image, now replaced by a reproduction, placed next to the trunk of the juniper of the apparition.

The tradition maintains that on May 28, 1246, the Virgin appeared to some shepherds on a juniper in the place of the sanctuary; a story of popular piety. Its most vivid feature is the local Romeria of the last Sunday of May, which brings together the ancient Land of Maderuelo, with mass, procession by the meadow and jotes to the are of dulzaina and tamboril.
