Our Lady of the Coronade

By the river Odiel, in the village of Sotiel Coronada, a hermitage guards the patron of Calañas, to which the people go down in Rome every Easter Monday to undertake the exciting "Taken."

Origin and history

The tradition places the origin of devotion in 1520, when the pastor Pedro Márquez, "of the Holy," found during a storm a small image of the Virgin by moving a slab of stone; when he entrusted himself to it, the storm ceased. The image, which, according to legend, returned time and time again to the site of the finding, motivated the construction of its hermitage in Sotiel Coronada. There is talk of more than five centuries of devotion and a tricentennial brotherhood.

The present sanctuary rises at the site of the find, by the river Odiel, and custody of the patron of Calañas, also a life honorary mayor of the municipality. Its most characteristic feature is the Paschal Romry with the "Traida": every Easter Monday the faithful travel about eight kilometres from Calañas to the sanctuary and return with the image to the village, among singers, alive and great popular participation.
