Our Lady of the Coronade
Patrona de Villafranca de los Barros (Badajoz)
Patrona de Villafranca de los Barros and its vineyards, Our Lady of the Coronada is venerated in a fortified sanctuary of the heart of the villa; canonically crowned in 1951.
Origin and history
The first documentary references to the sanctuary date from the end of the 15th century; in 1494 it was under the responsibility of the Council of Villafranca, by delegation of the Order of Santiago. It is a building with a basic floor, listed as a fortified church, with shrimp for the Virgin. The Brotherhood was founded canonically in 1935. Tradition attributes the origin to the appearance of the size to a peasant; pious foundational account.
She is a patron of Villafranca "from time immemorial," an honorary mayor and patron of the vineyards, in a region of strong wine tradition. It was crowned canonically by the Bishop of Badajoz in 1951, and its ninth solemn beginning on August 30.
