Our Lady of the Star

At the gates of Toledo, next to the Gate of Bisagra, a 14th-century hermitage guards Our Lady of the Star, "guide and bluff" of the city; canonically crowned in 2015, each Trinity travels the historical center in its "glorious procession."

Origin and history

The origin of the early hermitage of the Star dates back to 1335, linked to a fraternity that administered a small hospital of the poor in the Arrabal, to the northern entrance of Toledo by the Bisagra Gate. The Royal and Enlightened Brotherhood and Brotherhood of Our Lady of the Star places its canonical foundation in 1555. For more than five centuries the image has been devotional reference of the neighborhood and of those who entered the city by Bisagra. It was crowned canonically in the prized cathedral of Toledo on October 3, 2015.

The popular devotion states that the advocation of the Toledo Star would be one of the oldest in Spain and links it to the preaching of Saint Vincent Ferrer and a "vote of the Star"; a story of pious tradition not critically confirmed. Its most living feature is the "glorious procession" of the Sunday of the Most Holy Trinity, in which the image travels a wide itinerary through the historical centre, becoming present in the main spaces of Toledo.

The main patronage of the city: it does not contain (it is a well-established advocation of the Arrabal).
