Marian devotion
Our Lady of Light
Arroyo de la Luz (Cáceres)
In the Dehesa de la Luz, on the outskirts of Arroyo de la Luz, venerates the patron of the village; her Easter Monday party, with Romeria and famous horse races, is of Regional Tourist Interest.
Origin and history
The tradition places the origin of the cult in a legend of 1229, during the Reconquist: a light associated with the Virgin would have blinded the Muslims and enlightened the Christians, who defeated and raised a hermitage in the Dehesa of Light. The documented history has been affirmed since the 16th century, with the environment linked to the convent of San Francisco (1570).
The most characteristic feature is the union of Marian devotion, Romeria and horses: the feast starts with the procession from the parish and culminates in the Dehesa of Light, from which were born the famous horse races of the "Day of Light," Easter Monday.
Canonical coronation: not found in the sources.
