Marian devotion
Our Lady of the Rock
Patrona de Brihuega · "Reina de la Alcarria" (Guadalajara)
In the Cistercian church of Santa María de la Peña, next to the castle of the Bermeja Stone, the patron of Brihuega, called "Queen of the Alcarria," has been venerated; patron of the villa since 1445 and crowned in 1928.
Origin and history
The image is venerated in the church of Santa María de la Peña, one of the ancient temples of Brihuega, a 13th century cistercian building with a remarkable Gothic cover, next to the castle of the Bermeja Stone. The Marian dedication under the title of the Peña is therefore at least medieval.
According to the Confraternity of Our Lady of the Peña, she has been the patron of the villa since 1445 and was canonically crowned in 1928. In the devotional sphere, she is known as "Queen of the Alcarria," and her fellowship keeps alive a devotion of strong local identity.
