Marian devotion
Our Lady of the Salceda
Old Franciscan convent of the Alcarria (Peñalver- Tendilla, Guadalajara)
On a hill between Peñalver and Tendilla, the ruins of a famous Franciscan convent keep the memory of Our Lady of the Salceda, a comarcal devotion to the country born, according to tradition, of an apparition under a willow.
Origin and history
The tradition places in a Marian apparition two knights of the Order of St. John, refugees under a willow during a storm; in thanks they would have raised an hermitage. The Franciscan convent, linked to the reform of the Order in the 14th century, was an important spiritual center of the Alcarria - passed through it Cisneros and St Peter of Alcantara -, today in ruins.
The devotion to the Salceda is of a regional character, with Romeria and popular feast; it is held as the patron of Tendilla and of the neighbor Peñalver, and the image is venerated in the parish of Tendilla.
Formal patronage and canonical coronation: they are not safely recorded in the sources.
