Marian devotion
Our Lady of the Vine
Monastery of Santa María de la Vid · Ribera del Duero (Burgos)
Next to the Duero, in the heart of the Burgalese Ribera, the monastery of Santa María de la Vid bears a Gothic size of the Virgin; the spiritual heart of a land of vineyards, founded in the 12th century and now governed by agstines.
Origin and history
The monastery of Santa María de la Vid was founded in the middle of the 12th century for the premonstratense canons, by the noble Domingo Gómez de Candesina, and then passed to the Augustines, who occupy it today. The tradition places its origin in the place where the image of the Virgin of the Vid was found; a story of popular piety. The current image is a Gothic size of the 13th century.
The Virgin of the Vid is the main focus of devotion of the monastery, considered the spiritual heart of the Burgalese Ribera del Duero. His advocation, in a landscape of vineyards next to the Duero, is lived as that of a mother and protector of the earth; the whole is now a place of retreat and of reception.
Formal patronage, self-celebration and canonical coronation: they are not recorded in the sources.
