Marian devotion
Our Lady of the vineyards
Aranda de Duero (Burgos)
On Mount Costajan, on Aranda de Duero, a hermitage guards the Virgin of the Viñas, the patron of the city; a Gothic size whose title and legend - a cluster of grapes out of time - they enclose it to the land of the coastal wine.
Origin and history
The sanctuary is a hermitage on the outskirts of Aranda, on Mount Costajan - the ancient Mount Sacred -, configured over several centuries: its apse was ordered to be built in the 16th century by Don Pedro Alvarez de Acosta and the ship is from the 17th, baroque style. The headline image is a 14th century Gothic size, adapted for dress in the 17th century. Tradition places the image finding into the 12th century. In 1932, the Brotherhood of Our Lady of the Viñas was established to guard the hermitage and maintain the cult, the main center of Marian devotion of the city.
The tradition, collected by various sources, tells that the ancient devotion to the Virgin of Lara or the Viñas, in Quintanilla de las Viñas, moved to Aranda in the face of the Muslim invasion, hiding the image; years later the Virgin would have appeared to a farmer to tell him where she was and where she wanted her hermitage, giving her a sign of a cluster of grapes out of time. They're legendary stories. The title "of the Viñas" and that prodigious cluster underline its link to Aranda's wine-making character. During the ninth before the feast the Rosary is prayed daily in the hermitage.
Canonical coronation: not found in the sources.
