Our Lady of Loreto
Pattern of the fishermen of Xàbia (Jávea, Alicante)
In the marine district of Duanes de la Mar, Xàbia venerates Our Lady of Loreto, the patron of the fishermen; tradition tells that her image came from the sea, rescued from a ship stranded in the Cap Prim.
Origin and history
Our Lady of Loreto is patron of the marine district of Duanes de la Mar and of the fishermen of Xàbia, venerated as protector of the sea. The tradition tells us that an Italian ship shrouded in Cap Prim carrying an image of the Virgin of Loreto; the sailors of Xàbia rescued the image and the bell of the ship, and took the Virgin as a patron.
His devotion, of a strong marine character, is expressed in the parties and processions of Loreto. The local memory also retains Loreto's link with the protection of sea travelers.
Date of the feast and canonical coronation: they are not safely recorded in the sources.
