Our Lady of the Trumpets
Patron saint of Beas (Huelva)
In her sanctuary in Beas, Our Lady of the Clarines —patron saint of the town— is the star of one of the most important pilgrimages in Huelva, every August.
Origin and history
The first references to the sanctuary and its cults date back at least to the 14th century, with inventories of its possessions from the 16th and 17th centuries. The original hermitage is believed to have been built in the Late Middle Ages, coinciding with the legend of the Virgin's apparition at the beginning of the 14th century, first recorded in writing in 1714. The sanctuary retained its structure until the first third of the 19th century, when it underwent alterations due to the War of Independence and the confiscations of church property.
Our Lady of the Clarines is the patron saint of Beas and one of the most deeply rooted devotions in the province. Her pilgrimage, with religious services and a rural celebration from August 14th to 16th—the main day being the 15th—, documented at least since the Modern Age and fixed in its three-day format around 1930, is one of the most important in Huelva, with the transfer of the image to the town and the pilgrimage route to the hermitage.
