Our Lady of Miracles
Patrona de Agreda (Soria)
In Ágreda, the villa of the venerable Sister Mary of Jesus, the basilica of Our Lady of the Miracles keeps a devotion born, according to tradition, from the apparition of the Virgin to the Miguelillo herdsman of Yanguas.
Origin and history
The basilica of Our Lady of the Miracles is a great Gothic-Renaissance temple of the 16th century, built in the ancient convent of the Augustines from about 1560; it became the first museum of religious art of Castilla and León, with altarpieces and sculptures from the 15th to 18th centuries. The cult of the Virgin of the Miracles is solidly rooted in the life of Ágreda, until the parish is named.
The tradition includes the apparition of the Virgin to the Migelillo herdsman of Yanguas, who was asked to have a temple erected. According to the pious account, in 1527 the image miraculously leaned to the house of the converted Moorish John of Medrano during a procession, prodigy that would have moved to declare her patron of the villa, title confirmed by Pope Paul III. The advocation owes its name to the many "miracles" attributed to its intercession.
The exact date of the feast and canonical coronation: they do not record with certainty in the sources.
