Marian devotion
Our Lady of the Miracles of Amil
Moraña Sanctuary (Pontevedra)
In the place of A Chan, in Moragna, the sanctuary of the Miracles of Amil congregates a very busy rosemary, with pilgrims who keep their promises turning their knees to the chapel.
Origin and history
The tradition places the origin of devotion at the end of the 18th century, when a farmer, Sebastian de Castro, would have asked the Virgin for water in time of drought; as a spring sprung, he ordered to carve in gratitude a stone image of about 80 centimeters, about 1778. The documented story shows that the works of the chapel began around 1780, with the approval of the prelate Bocanegra, and that the present temple was opened in 1892.
It is one of the most popular Marian romaneries in the area, on the Sunday following the 8 September, with pilgrims who make promises by kneeling the outside of the chapel and offering candles and exvotes. Devotion has a strong penitential component and thanksgiving.
Formal patronage and canonical coronation: they are not safely recorded in the sources.
