Marian devotion
Our Lady of Remedies
Sanctuary of Castro Caldelas (Ourense)
In Castro Caldelas, the Virgin of Los Remedios is venerated in a neoclassical sanctuary; its surroundings are the setting for the famous "fachós", the torches of fire on the night of San Sebastián.
Origin and history
The current church is a Neoclassical building erected between 1812 and 1861 on the site of an earlier 16th-century structure, which itself replaced a medieval chapel (the Prado Chapel). It is a spacious building with a Latin cross floor plan and an elliptical dome. Sources provide good documentation of the building, but lack a detailed early devotional history of the image.
Their devotion is deeply rooted in the popular religiosity of Castro Caldelas and its festive atmosphere, especially around the famous "fachós", the large straw torches that are lit on the night of January 18-19, the eve of Saint Sebastian, in the atrium and surroundings of the sanctuary.
Formal patronage, proper feast day and exact year of canonical coronation: these are not reliably stated in the sources.
