Our Lady of Remedies
Patrona de Fregenal de la Sierra (Badajoz)
On the outskirts of Fregenal de la Sierra, a Baroque sanctuary with a famous "Salon de los Mantos" guards the patron of the villa, venerated from a miracle of 1506 and honored with Romeria on April 28.
Origin and history
The sanctuary, in the dehesa about six kilometres from the village, is a baroque building that was the fruit of enlargements between the 16th and 18th centuries, with a prominent shrimp, the Hall of the Illustrious Sons and the Hall of the Mantos. The advocation "of the Remedies" is documented together with the Virgin of Fregenal since 1506, the year of a famous miracle; before it was simply called Our Lady.
His devotion is articulated around the rural sanctuary and the Romeria of April 28, with strong popular roots; an Association protects the cult and organizes the annual transfer of the image to the parish in December. A legend dates back to the times of the Arab invasion, a story considered pious by the studies themselves.
