The parish of Osh
The Catholic parish of Osh is one of the most important faith communities in Kyrgyzstan. Founded in the 19th century, the parish has served the Catholics of the region for generations.
The Virgin of the Holy Mountain
The image of Our Lady of the Holy Mountain is a wooden carving depicting the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus, surrounded by snow-capped mountains and shepherds. Tradition says that the Virgin appeared to a shepherd from Osh during a terrible storm in the Alay Mountains.
"The Virgin of the Holy Mountain protects the shepherds of Kyrgyzstan on their journeys through the mountains."
Local anecdotes
The inhabitants of Osh recount that during the Soviet era, parishioners secretly gathered to pray the Rosary before the image of Our Lady of the Holy Mountain. Despite the persecution, their faith never died, and the faithful attributed this to the protection of the Virgin Mary.
Prayer
O Virgin of the Holy Mountain, protector of shepherds. You who watch over those who travel through the mountains, intercede for us before your Son Jesus. Protect the people of Kyrgyzstan and guide us toward peace. Amen.
