Marian devotion
Our Lady of Pedrajas
Poza de la Sal (Burgos)
Near Poza de la Sal, the sanctuary of Our Lady of Pedrajas has for centuries been the heart of the devotion of the Pozans; it retains valuable platetry brought from New Spain, testimony of its roots and of the Spanish emigration to Indias.
Origin and history
The sanctuary of Our Lady of Pedrajas is a place of Marian worship of strong arraigo, presented as the center of the devotion of the Pozans and of the peoples close for centuries, with a marked territorial and rosemary character. Although sources do not set a precise date of foundation, cultural continuity is pluricentary.
A study on the plateau of the Kingdom of New Spain documents in the sanctuary pieces of silver from Mexico and Puebla de los Angeles, about 1790, in late rococo style, offered in gratitude to the Virgin. These pieces show that in the 18th century devotion was consolidated and had benefactors linked to Spanish emigration to Indias, underlining the votive dimension of this advocation.
Date of the feast, stories of origin and canonical coronation: not recorded in the sources.
