Marian devotion
Our Lady of Riga
Riga, Letonia
The Cathedral of Riga, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, is the spiritual heart of Latvia.
The Cathedral of Santa Maria
The Cathedral of Santa Maria de Riga was built in 1211 by the Teutonic Knights. Originally Catholic, it was converted to Lutheranism during the Protestant Reform of the 16th century. However, devotion to the Virgin Mary has persisted in the memory of the Latvian people.
The bell of the Virgin
In the bell tower of the cathedral is a 15th century bell dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Tradition says this bell played alone on the day of the apparition of the Virgin in Aglona in 1608, announcing the miracle to the whole city.
The statue of the Virgin on the roof
Prayer
Oh, Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church and protector of Riga. You who sail this city from the top of your bell tower, intercede for us before your Son Jesus. It protects the inhabitants of Latvia and guides us to peace and unity. Amen.
