Our Lady of Rocamador
Patrona de Sangüesa (Navarra)
In the church of Santa María the Real de Sangüesa venerates Our Lady of Rocamador, patron of the city, a gothic size covered in silver that brought to this stage of the Way of Santiago the famous French acvocation of Rocamadour.
Origin and history
The image of Our Lady of Rocamador is a gothic size of silver-coated wood, dated at the end of the 13th century or the beginning of the XIV century, which reproduces the French acvocation of Rocamadour, in the Quercy, next to the road Podensis del Camino de Santiago. His presence in Sangüesa is explained by the circulation of pilgrims and cults along the Jacobea routes. In the parish of Santa Maria there was already in the 14th century the co-fradia of Santa Maria, whose headline is called in the 16th century Our Lady of Rocamador.
She is venerated as patron of Sangüesa, along with San Sebastián, deeply linked to the religious and civic life of the city. It was traditionally widely invoked as "Virgin of the Water": in times of drought it was made procession with the image and penance to ask for rain. His old parties, around August 15, linked bonfires, dances and repeat bells with liturgical acts - Masses, Salve, Rosario and gozos.
Canonical coronation: not found in the sources.
