Marian devotion in Estonia, a Baltic country where the Catholic faith has survived over the centuries.
History of Marian devotion in Estonia
The devotion to the Virgin Mary in Estonia dates back to the time of the Baltic Crusades in the 13th century, when the Teutonic Knights introduced Christianity into the region. The Cathedral of Santa María de Tallinn (Domekirche), built in the 13th century, is one of the oldest religious buildings in Estonia.
The Cathedral of Santa Maria
The Cathedral of Santa María de Tallinn, also known as Domekirche, is the oldest Lutheran cathedral in Estonia. Originally Catholic, it was converted to Lutheranism during the Protestant Reform of the 16th century. However, devotion to the Virgin Mary has persisted in the memory of the Estonian people.
«En Estonia, la Virgen María es recordada como la madre que nunca abandonó a su pueblo, incluso en los tiempos más oscuros.»
The Virgin Mary during the Soviet occupation
During the Soviet occupation (1940-1991), religion was heavily persecuted in Estonia. Many churches were closed or destroyed. However, Marian devotion remained alive in the clandestine. Catholic families continued to pray the Rosary in their homes, transmitting the faith from generation to generation.
The shrine of Pirita
The Monastery of Santa Brigida de Pirita, near Tallinn, is a pilgrimage place where the Virgin Mary is venerated. Founded in the 15th century, it was destroyed during the Livonia War and restored in the 20th century. Every year, pilgrims from the Baltic countries come to this sanctuary to honor the Mother of God.
Miracles and devotions
Throughout the history of Estonia, many miracles have been attributed to the intercession of the Virgin Mary:
- Protection during wars and occupations
- Disease cures
- Preserving the faith in times of persecution
- Families united in prayer
