Marian devotion
Our Lady of Tartu
Tartu, Estonia
Marian devotion in the university city of Tartu, where the Catholic faith has survived over the centuries.
La Catedral de Tartu
The Cathedral of Tartu, dedicated to the Saints Peter and Paul, is one of the oldest religious buildings in Estonia. Built in the 13th century, the cathedral has witnessed the history of the country and the Marian devotion of its people.
The image of the Virgin of Wisdom
The Virgin Mary during the Reformation
During the Protestant Reform of the 16th century, devotion to the Virgin Mary was suppressed in Estonia. However, the Catholic community of Tartu kept the tradition underground. Catholic families continued to pray the Rosary in their homes, transmitting the faith from generation to generation.
The shrine of Kuremäe
The Kuremäe Monastery, though Orthodox, is one of the most important pilgrimage places in Estonia. The Virgin Mary is venerated in this place with great devotion, and the faithful come to ask for her intercession in times of need.
Prayer
Oh, Virgin of Wisdom, Mother of the Church and protector of the students. You who illuminate the minds of young people on their way to knowledge, intercede for us before your Son Jesus. It guides the inhabitants of Estonia to truth and peace. Amen.
