History of the Sanctuary

Troyan Monastery was founded in the 16th century by monks seeking a place of spiritual retreat. The monastery church is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and houses a miraculous image of the Virgin that has been venerated for centuries.

The miraculous image

The image of Our Lady of Troyan is a 17th-century oil painting depicting the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus. The image has been restored several times over the centuries, but devotion to it has remained unwavering.

Miracles and devotions

Throughout the history of Bulgaria, numerous miracles have been attributed to the intercession of the Virgin Mary:

The annual pilgrimage

Every year on August 15 (the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary), the faithful from Bulgaria flock to Troyan Monastery to honor the Mother of God. The pilgrimage is one of the most important in Bulgaria.

The Virgin Mary during the communist era

During the communist regime (1946-1989), religion was persecuted in Bulgaria. However, devotion to the Virgin Mary remained alive underground. Families continued to pray the Rosary in their homes, passing the faith down from generation to generation.
