The Catholic parish of Turku is one of the oldest faith communities in Finland. Founded in the 13th century, the parish has served the Catholics of the region for generations.
The Virgin of the Aura
The image of Our Lady of the Aura is a wooden carving depicting the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus, surrounded by rivers and forests. Tradition says that the Virgin appeared to a monk in Turku during a terrible flood of the Aura River.

Local anecdotes
The inhabitants of Turku recount that during the Great Northern War (1700-1721), the parishioners gathered to pray the Rosary before the image of Our Lady of the Aura. Despite the Russian occupation, the church remained undamaged, and the faithful attributed this to the protection of the Virgin Mary.
